The closest choice depends on the experience you want
If you want a free outdoor Halloween display, begin with Hills of Unrest on 51st Avenue. If you want an organized commercial haunted-house experience, Midnight Terror is in Oak Lawn at 5520 W. 111th Street. The names may appear in similar searches, but they are not substitutes for each other.
For display hopping, concentrate on Oak Lawn, Hometown, Burbank, and Chicago Ridge. For a booked attraction, decide on tickets first and fit nearby stops around that commitment. Never assume that a Halloween display and a ticketed haunt share hours or admission rules.

Compare more than the headline price
Time and admission
Check whether a ticket is dated or timed, which attractions it includes, and whether extra experiences cost more. Read the operator’s own refund, late-arrival, and weather terms. A short advertised attraction time does not include driving, parking, screening, or queues.
Location and arrival
Some attractions have special arrival arrangements. HellsGate’s seasonal directions send visitors to shuttle parking at 301 W. 2nd Street in Lockport. That is a useful reminder to follow the current visitor directions rather than an old map pin or a photograph’s location tag.
Scare level
Read the actual age and intensity guidance. Terms such as extreme, family friendly, lights-on, and no-scare describe different offerings and may apply only on particular dates. Our guide to home haunts and haunted houses explains the basic categories, but an individual operator’s current rules are what matter.
Watch for old locations and canceled seasons
Seasonal attractions can move, change format, or skip a year. Devil’s Playground has historical Oak Lawn references but now lists Flossmoor. Haunted Hills has appeared at different Indiana locations over time; use its current operator information. Evil Intentions was reported as not opening for the 2026 season, so it is not included here as a current night-out recommendation.
When a source mixes current and previous years, pause before making plans. The Old Joliet Haunted Prison pages reviewed for this guide contained mixed-year material; its 2026 schedule was not treated as confirmed. For a current recommendation, an operator calendar should take precedence over an undated list or an old review.
Combine a destination haunt with a neighborhood stop
A destination attraction can be the main event while a local display adds a different pace. At Hills of Unrest, free admission means you can plan around the confirmed visiting window without buying a separate ticket. Donations are welcome, and the display closes at 10 p.m.
Keep the route realistic. Choose an attraction’s confirmed time slot, check current traffic, and leave room for a change of plan. If the evening begins to feel rushed, save another haunt for a different night. Our planning checklist and hours and weather guide help you make that call.
A practical comparison before you book
Write down the answers for your two strongest candidates. Comparing actual details is more useful than comparing promotional adjectives such as terrifying or unforgettable.
- Experience: Is it a yard display, indoor route, trail, hayride, or a combination? Which parts are included with admission?
- Arrival: Does the operator direct you to a parking lot, shuttle pickup, or a different entrance from the attraction’s mailing address?
- Calendar: Is your chosen date available, and is the ticket tied to a time slot? Check the year on the calendar.
- Group fit: What does the operator say about age, intensity, sensory effects, and access? Ask about needs that the website does not answer.
- Total cost: Include the actual ticket selection, disclosed fees, parking, and any extras your group wants. A headline starting price is not a complete budget.
- Change of plan: Read the operator’s terms for late arrival, weather, exchanges, and cancellations before purchasing.
Hills of Unrest fills a different role in that comparison: a free neighborhood yard display with a confirmed seasonal window and optional donations. If you combine it with a paid attraction, give the two visits separate time allowances. A late queue at the larger haunt should not turn into an assumption that the yard display will stay open beyond 10 p.m.
If the goal is simply more outdoor scenery, the searchable home-display directory is a more direct starting point than a ticketed-haunt roundup. It includes approximate distance and source-listed schedules, with the same reminder to verify the operator’s latest information.
